Rear Sprocket Movement - Whats normal?

Post by exup » Tue Mar 16, 2021 11:18 am

Hi (this is a cross post from KTM UK forum)

I have a 1290 Super Duke R 2014 but this would apply to any of the first model and GT range seeing as they all share the same parts.
Could anyone just check to see if they have as much play in the sprocket carrier/cush drive. They are not cheap to replace, so before spending big I just want to know if this is normal.

Just checked mine for you. It moves a tiny amount, less than a mil ie. a lot less than yours. No suggestions to your problem though, sorry.

Sorry I haven't been checking this forum often.

There should be no play in the rear sprocket. I replaced my cush drive assembly at 70,000km, which was a little overdue. New chain and rear sprocket at 60k was destroyed within that 10k due to cush drive wear.
My bike is fairly stock, so anything poking out more HP should probably be checked from 50,000km onward.
Mine will be due for replacement again in the next 5k or so. Currently at 125,000km.

Hi Muckweed,

so you are saying on your SuperDuke no play at all, only I checked a newer one at the shop it had play with low KMs. Did you check my Video above, is it anything like that or yours is rock solid.

When you replaced it did you replace all 6 bolt/rubber cushes plus the carrier. Parts 21 and 20

I watched your video then checked my 2019 1290 GT. I could not really get any movement at all.

Exup, sorry for the late reply.
Like I said mine moves 0.5mm tops, a lot less than yours. I haven’t replaced anything, all stock bar the sprocket. Bikes done 23k miles.
