Why should you do this?
Just curious.
Is there any advantage to this surgery? and if so, which?

Our 990's have a system called Electonic Power Control which reduces the HP & Torque in 2nd & 3 gears.

If you want full power in 2nd & 3rd gears you can do this mod or Turn off Electronic Power Control using Tune ECU.

Ok, I did not know.
Of course, you want the full force of the 2nd and 3rd gear.
Then I have to do the same. :)
Is it possible to do on an otherwise stockcykle?

thanks for the quick reply.

Yes you can do this mod to a completely standard 990.

Wow, kevxtx, you are really fast.
Thank you for the quick and good answer. :)
There is little work in the garage this afternoon.

It will be interesting to see what difference it makes.
I have the girlfriend's SMT to compared with as well. ;)

I first did the wiring mod as I did not have my Tune ECU cable made up I was waiting for the KTM connector & pins from the UK, I have since reconnected the wiring & have EPC turned off via Tune ECU.

Stunningly easy. Works on my US version. Just note that the wires on either side of the connector are different colors so you have to look a round a bit for the right connector.

This should be pinned so it doesn't get lost!!!
Full Akro (w/baffles), Motohooligan Airfilter and Secondaries, SAS/cannister/airbox removed, US Fuel at 4000-8000 feet elevation. PowerCommander and 2 channel AutoTune.

Just a quick question.

I have fitted my SMT with the Akrapovich. After that, I had the electronic ignition remapped as the SMR.

After that, is your mod still necessary?

Bye

You have to make sure the (EPC) is unticked in Tune ECU, otherwise you need to carry out the wiring mod. None of the SMR maps I have seen have the EPC unticked.

EPC stands for Electronic Power Control

And they do this for emissions?

The SMR and SMT map are the same map (as is the regular SM).

I read somewhere that the EPC is done to meet noise regulations more than anything else. Just turn it off in TuneECU or do the wire mod.

Mine, in order:
1. JC Exhaust slip-ons + 2011 Akra map + turning off O2 sensors (EPC is off by default in Akra maps)
2. Before JCs: 2011 map + turning off the O2 sensors
3. Turning off EPC (stock maps)

Notes:
Turning off the O2 sensors in general made the biggest difference in rideability and throttle control with any map.

With the EPC I don't notice a difference in peak power, but with it on sometimes when I'd downshift and snap the throttle open to make a pass on the highway, it felt like a turbo had to spool up before the power came on. Turning it off cured that. In most riding I don't really notice a difference between off and on - that said, I see no reason to ever have it on.

I also see no reason not to load the Akra map with an aftermarket exhaust. It makes better power and I haven't gotten under 40 MPG yet with it - this is actually an improvement from the ~35-37 MPG I typically got with the stock map. I'm quite a happy camper!

I'll probably keep the stock exhaust for now, but should still turn off the epc and O2 sensors? right?
What about Mapping for stock exhaust? any suggestions?
As others have said, great info,

Yes, I would do those things... Get the 2011 map for stock exhausts from TuneECU while you're at it.... And you can disable the O2 sensors and EPC in there.

Don't get the one that says "106HP", that's a detuned one for some market (France?).

Wow man, we should just permalink your mod list as a "what to do to a 990 SM" list... Good stuff!

Question, did your fuel economy change with the DNA airbox mod?
