gearbox failure, 1290R SUPERDUKE.

Post by zedter06 » Thu Jun 13, 2019 8:24 am

I've got a 1290R first registered in october 2017 with a 2 year warranty, travelled 26,000 kms and has had a serious gearbox failure, ( broke a gear which then went through the rest of the gearbox ), been without the bike for 2 months now and it doesn't look like coming back anytime soon, Very disappointed with the backup from KTM, Seems it took KTM Australia about 4 weeks to even approve a claim on it?. I don't have much confidence in the bike now and expect to be returning to Kawasaki as soon as possible.
Is this the normal sort of backup offered by KTM?
p:s- This bike has never even been on a track !

Sorry to hear of your troubles zedter06.

I have an 1290SDGT with 15,000kms no issues...... was talking with a guy at my local KTM shop and he had the same 17GT as me but with 43,000kms on the clock..... again no issues.

I post on the other forum (KTM forum) and several owners have well over 40k kms with no issues. However a couple of posts have surfaced from owners who have had cam shaft wear issues - but i think they were either unlucky with a bad surface incident or, they have been trying to run double esther racing oil for 15,000kms before changing oil. (racing formula oils only last for 4-5000kms whereas road formula's have long life polymers for 7-10k kms life).

KTM are probably highly suspicious of your incident and may be investigating thoroughly, so if you are a genuine claimant, be patient and they will approve the claim. I don't think there has ever been a gearbox failure..... but I may not have read all the forums so I can't be 100% sure of that.

KTM Aus may also be communicating with Austria for options (ie repair/replace) so it all takes time.

Hope it works out for you soon ;) .

PS If you had a similar issue with a JAP bike I think you'd be waiting a similar time...... and the Aus KTM importer is based in Perth WA...... maybe they are arguing over who gets to fly to NZ to inspect the engine

Cheers mate, just back from giving my GT a bit of a workout and I'm still smiling...... although it started to rain here in Brissy after i washed the bike last Sunday....... ..... must have been my fault for cleaning the bugs off too soon  .

Let us know what the cause of the failure was when you hear from the powers that be. I've only read of a couple of nasty issues on a few forums, but I gather the majority of bikes are fine - but that doesn't help you while in 'dry dock' .

Hope it gets sorted to your satisfaction so you can get back riding soon ;) .

Hi Dave, have got the bike back and it seems fine, The repair shop said it had broken a tooth off one of the gears that then went through the rest causing damage but that there was no obvious cause for this. can't find anything to replace it with so will be keeping it at this point in time.

I see the problem here, you need to take that 1290R to the track. KTM held a trackway at Taupo, bloody great day. Hopefully they are going to make this an annual event. YOU need to go.

Nah, will give that a miss, i broke the gearbox without any track day use, besides, i've got a 636 kawasaki track bike. Don't have to worry too much about dropping that if things turn pear shaped, lol.

Yep, broken tooth, that figures ;) .

Probably sheer bad luck (sorry for the pun  )...... I guess all the manufacturers are in the same boat as they all use 3rd party suppliers for components ....... long gone are the in-house parts manufacturing days, only assembly lines remain.
