does anyone know offhand if the subframe is boxed hollow framework?....perhaps by simply filling it, some strengthening and rigity could be gained?

It is, and the third time (!) the subframe on my 640 Duke II snapped we stuck a couple of steel rods down the inside of each tube to strengthen it, external sleeves having failed miserably the second time.

Alas, I don't know whether it worked - the bike was nicked (twice!) shortly after, but I have no reason to think it wouldn't have at least helped.

Is that not just the rack thats rated at 18lbs and not the subframe?

I doubt they are referring to just the rack. You could probably take it off and run over it with a car and not break it. :)

Just came across this thread. That is really disappointing. It made me skeptical of buying a used 2009.
Yes i could reinforce by myself, but i find it kind of stupid doing things on my own when it is obvious that
KTM should take care of her own mistakes.

I am really confused now if it is worth getting this bike.... :?

would not let it be a deal breaker for me to!!

off topic a little.
Im off to Germany later in the year and was wondering if anyone has used one of the cheaper topboxs of ebay like

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Cube-29-L ... 5d3a45954f
it may only be used a couple of times. So trying to save a couple of quid over a top range one.

any advise welcome.
thanks
Dave

The mrs bought a cheap topbox from Ebay to use on her scooter. First the plastic base broke, replaced free with a metal one, then the box itself broke. After that she gave up and bought a low-end Givi which has lasted ever since.

You can get a Givi Monolock with universal mounting for under fifty quid, which is only a tank of unleaded more than that one you linked to. Is it worth it to risk having to run around an Autobahn picking up your pants?

Not sure if my sub frame is failing but I have one of the tell-tale cracks on the right side.

Not sure how long it's been there. I use a top box but I believe I've not overloaded it. I weighed my typical load because of this thread.

Cursory inspection of the sub frame did not reveal any issues and there are no other cracks in the distributor tube.

If your bike is a 2011 model then it had the 'updated design' subframe,( the update KTM did not shout about)
which should be a lot more robust ! :!:

Have a look at an old link of mine that shows the repair I had done.

Well, it looks like I've joined the Broken Subframe club again.

Not structural, as such, but the cross-member that the rear topbox mount bolts onto has fatigued to the point of failure on both sides, so I'm having to ride without the box for the time being while I decide how best to repair it.

On top of the oil leak, the failing clocks and the possible worn rings, I think I may have run it into the ground in almost exactly 37000 miles, plus however many the clocks have missed while going haywire.

I have a subframe I got off eBay
I was going to strengthen it and hold it as a spare
The seller said it had a slight twist in it
And it doesn't look to bad to me
I gave 25 quid plus post for it
If you need / want it pm me
same price as I paid is all I would be after

As an aside the new multi rides nice lol

I've already got a replacement, though it did cost me rather more than 25 quid. Going to get Paul at Brackens to do the swap because I can't be arsed this time, and it needs a few other things doing as well.

Fingers crossed the engine isn't as buggered as I fear it might be. It still goes well but the oil consumption is beyond a joke.

Nice welding.
So KTM did not solve the rear subframe problems with the 2011 updated frame.
I have not had any problems but I don't routinely carry much other than me on my bike.

Well, kinda. They solved the problem that caused the subframe itself to break, but that revealed a problem which causes the luggage mounting points to fail.

In my case, replacing the subframe was easy compared to replacing the base gaskets, and taking the bike apart revealed the massive hole in the exhaust y-piece. So it could almost be seen as a service item ;)

I've had mine strengthened as a preventative measure:

If it's anything like mine, it's not the tubes that'll break (they seem to have fixed that problem), it's the mounts. Extra weld around them will help, but the bracing along the subframe itself won't do much at all.
