What oil are you guys running? Summer vs winter?

Post by slowdown » Mon Mar 12, 2018 1:55 am

As a 1290 owner in the states, it seems that most of the substances KTM recommends are somewhat difficult to source locally. I'm happy to order online if I need to, but was just wondering what others are using, or have used, and with what results.

It's just about Spring here in the Pacific NW United States, its been about 4k miles since my last oil change, and I'm looking for projects to do before Spring really springs. Spring time, in my area, means I'll rarely be seeing temps below 40 degrees F.

Who has strayed from the KTM recommendation of Motorex Power Synthetic 5W40? If you have, what are you using? Does anyone run a different viscosity depending on the season? What other flavors and brands of oil have pleased you guys? Are there any oils that are less expensive than Motorex that you've been happy with?

:D

That's only a recommendation for temps below 0°C. Above and 10W50 Power Synthetic is the recommended oil.

That said, I use Total 10W50 4T synthetic as it seems to work well and is very reasonably priced.

Specification is what’s important and as long as the oil you’re buying has the JASO MA specification it will do just fine.

I get my Motorex online, it's the only oil I will put in my SD R. It's expensive but if I could not afford to run the bike properly I would never have ordered it new from the dealer!!.

I've been using Amsoil 10-40 on both my SMT & SDr, combined 65,000 miles. Both bikes must think it's Motorex, they haven't complaint.

After all these years and miles I spend more time enjoying the ride than worrying, some items deserve a bit of attention but nothing seems to implode when not done strictly by the book.
