Excessive Throttle Play

Post by 1290 » Sun May 31, 2015 2:21 am

Any one find the 1290 has an excessive amount of throttle play. I pulled mine apart and it cant be adjusted. I maybe different to other people as I like zero free play.

Go to the bottom of the page then onto the next few. It talks about what I did to fix this problem. I now have no free play in the throttle twist grip and this is the only solution for this issue. My changes means no rotational free play because of the newly built up drive tangs on the throttle and much reduced clearance along the axis of the twist grip.
As a result my bike is much nicer to ride in sports mode with no throttle snatch at low twist.

Thanks abc for the great article - I performed a very similar operation on my Super Duke and it is a night and day difference.

I am a throttle-play Nazi myself. I've got zero tolerance for any play at all. My 500 exc suffers badly from it, even after I got the mechanic to take a look at it.

I noticed on my duke that there is only play while rolling the throttle forward. In it's neutral position it has no play at all (yet). Will that trick work when there is play only on the decel rotation ? And will it work on my 500 ?

It will work on your 1290 as long as you know exactly what you are doing. Whatever direction the play is you just build up that side of both the drive tangs. Don't try it unless you are competent otherwise you might cause your throttle to jam or the throttle calibration will be way off or outside its calibration range.
I don't know if it will work on your 500 as I haven't had one apart. In theory it will work on anything with fly by wire and excess throttle play.

Hmm, sounds like a delicate procedure, And one I'm probably not capable of. The throttle jam scenario would be interesting lol. I might try it on the 500 first and see how that goes. Thanks much!

I also noticed this as well...Way too much play in the throttle. I now have the PP heated grips installed and the throttle is alot better. I also have an FE350 (KTM XCF-W basically) and can attest to the fact that adjusting the throttle play is really weird. I have the G2 throttle in that which is also alot better than it's factory setup...might want to look into it!

Dealer was able to remove all excess throttle play whilst in for service. His response was as if it's not unusual for that to happen - in fact he picked it up as I was ok with it. All sorted now but didn't ask what he did.
