This is what I found with my last bike, and will carry over to the SMT. I am going to have the local guy work his magic on my seat. I went through two generic "custom" seats on my Versys and was not really happy with either. I think it will be worth while to give the local guy a go.

MARV wrote:Out here in the GREAT northwest,We have the seat wizard. RICH'S custom seats in Kingston, wa.

I have spent a lot of money with him. And I have been on the other Custom made seats that are generic.

You are wasting your money if you DO NOT have a seat expert like Rich make your seat fit you.

The stock seat only needs a Leather cover put on it. Period.

Before you spend a fortune on getting new seats with gel inserts try wiping your ass/arses with surgical spirit.

It will toughen up all your soft baby bums maybe just enough to ride everyday on the stock seat.lol just kidding but before you do spend major dollars try a pair of cycling shorts under your troosers / pants. :D never needed anything more to get rid of monkey butt, even on the 450 exc 4"x2" plank

I got one second hand and reckon the bloke who sold it just bought a gel seat cover and recovered the standard seat. Royal pain in the arse.
Will see if LICS can do a better job. (www.licsltd.co.uk)

I was not happy with the stock seat and bought gel seat. Did a full day ride yesterday and the gel seat felt good for me. Normally on stock seat, I would feel uncomfortable after an hour. Several hours in to the ride yesterday, I just realized that the seat felt goid and was not bothering me :D

Exactly the same here - I thought the standard seat was rubbish, anything more than an hour on the bike was murder. The gel seat is a revelation, spent all day on the bike and not so much as a twinge.

I think it depends on your weight and shape; seems the people that love the gel seat hate the std one, and vice versa!!!

I don't mind either seat, both are good for a full tank of fuel and then some.
If you're doing more than a couple hundred miles though I find the gel seat virtually disappears - you don't think about any discomfort in your backside - so I think it works well. Mind you, there's something wrong with my shoulder and the ache from that distracts me from any pain anywhere else. Typical bloke thing - I can't multi-task, one pain is all I can handle. :?

TBH I didn't have a problem with the standard seat and I bought the gel seat because it was cheap. I really don't notice much difference between the two except initially the gel seat seems firmer :? Either seat is fine for the SM-T's 160 mile range. Maybe you would notice the difference on a longer trip.

In case of interest: I got the application of 1 cm layer of "cold-gel" at http://www.granucciseats.com/index.htm. I was "traditional" in the choice of colors of the cover, but one can get anything. Customers must send their seat and get back the product. Not cheap, but absolutely good work (effectiveness, materials, looking). The 1 cm layer raises about 0.5 cm with the rider on. For people of weight 90 kg and more, a 2 cm layer is advisable, raising about 1.1 cm the height of the seat. The comfort is excellent, while being firm. My wife says it is better than the seat we had on the BMW!

Translation of the legend:
1. original foam
2. "gel effect" layer (more effective that standard gel)
3. impermeable layer
4. Eco-leather (also water-proof)

that looks a nice well made product, and it looks OE

some of the aftermarket seats esp our Yank cousins are keen on looks too 1980`s cadillac for my tastes.

As it is, I find the OE seat comfy for my uses, which admittedly arent generally distances longer than a full tank of petrol.

Lower seats almost always have less padding, so are less comfy.

Those with wee short legs like me...just man up and get used to it.

I'm aprecciate this option of seat using the stock seat. Actuallly I'm using the Ergo KTM and works good in long travel, but I'm very curious about this solution....is better or not of Ergo KTM;

Stock seat isnt too bad for shorter trips (to me)....do 100mi on an offroad KTM seat...that'll put some pain in the wrong places.....definately use riding shorts after the first experience....

Gel seat - any difference?

Recently purchased the gel seat. It feels like stock, returning it for something more legit.

Very unhappy with this and looking for an alternativ Seat as well!
