Topping up cooling system

Postby Ballon » Sun Feb 03, 2013 8:54 pm

Has anyone had to do this?

I commute on my bike and it runs hot very easily, I was warned about this by the dealer.

When cleaning the bike today I could not see any coolant in the expansion tank, I do realise that it gets sucked back into the cooling system as the engine cools, however should I be able to see some coolant in the expansion tank.

I commute and have never had come close to overheating. I would think our climate in Seattle would be comparable to yours.

Do you perform your own oil changes? If so, have you noticed waves in your paper filter or lightness in color of your oil indicating an impending water pump failure? These are the signs reported by other 990 owners.

I'm just over 10k miles and my coolant tank is half full although very hard to see given the coolant is very light colored. Much easier to see with the gas tank off. I've only add a couple of ounces in the 18 months I've had the bike.

Thanks for the reply. No I don't do my own servicing as the bike not 2 years old yet. I will take the tank off and have a look. I've only done 8,000km so I will be p****d if it is the water pump.

1.5 years owning the bike and running it nearly every day - Hong Kong is 30+ degrees Centigrade from May to October, with 90% humidity June to September but I've never had any issues with serious overheating and the coolant is still okay ...
