990 SMT - 690 Duke Headlight Conversion

Post by Slomo » Sat Apr 19, 2014 8:04 pm

Hi all, just thought I would post some pictures of my latest project. Credit to Kevxtx who did a similar conversion on his 990SMT and gave me a couple tips along the way (see Kev's Mod List for pictures / other misc. details). The main reason for the conversion was to get rid of helmet buffeting / noise. Reason #2 was that I wanted the SMR look from Day 1 of buying the bike, but the SMR was not available in the US for 2012. Anyways, the conversion process was not bad at all - I can say this is a easy-medium project that can be done by anyone interested (for under $350 USD  far better than buying the SMR hardware! ). Any details about the conversion, feel free to post or PM. Next on the list is painting the tank...I am thinking of doing it in Matte or Gloss Black..not sure yet!

Wow that looks great Dave, that's 4 SMT's that I know who have gone this route, the 690 head light does fit well in place on the SMT & is fairly easy install, you will notice the silence in your helmet instantly. I forgot to mention in my post I bought 4 little round blanking grommets from my local hardware to block off the screw holes on the tank, they were black so painted them white :D

I will add this link to my 690 H/L conversion page so it does not get lost so others can see what you have done.

I agree...I think the 690 headlight looks even better than the SMR, IMO. I was thinking of maybe mounting 2 small LED driving lights in the front tank holes and grommets in the back holes. It is definitely a quieter ride now...I just couldnt seem to get the stock frontend to work with me, even with the shield removed. All is good now...and I actually enjoy looking at the front of the bike now

If you need any graphics for the mask let me know, I got mine made in the UK & they have all the correct dimensions for as perfect fit.

More info here on the conversion: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5414&start=220
