Re: Good 2nd bike to a K1300S?

Hey guys On the plus side, I loved the SMT's engine character, seating position, comfort and slick gearbox. However, coming from the K1300S I felt the power was lacking. From press reviews, I was expecting to be giggling and shreiking like a fool, but I think the 70hp drop was too much. Instead I w...

Re: Skidmarx Hugger install

fitted mine and found that on full suspension travel it catches on the exhaust cans.(standard cans are fitted).Sent skidmarx some pictures and am waiting for a solution. :? WTF!!!! How on earth do you get your hugger to touch two side mounted exhaust cans? I can't imagine managing that with a 6' ve...

Re: Skidmarx Hugger install

I have just noticed today prior to going out small cracks around the the left near rear sprocket hugger bolt. All bolts are properly fitted and nothing is loose. So only movement is normal vibrations. Appears a design fault fault or weakness in the plastic. Check your Skidmarx hugger! I used a soft...

Re: Leo Vince and heat shield

I'm looking at some leo cans for my SMT. I've seen photos on the bike but none from the rear, and i want to see if they leave an unsightly gap between the heat shield and the can, or if they fill the space correctly? I notice they are the same cans for the SMR - so hope they fit well? I notice they...

Re: World's Greatest MC

Somebody on here will want to swap their horrible white plastics one day... so i am hanging on till that day :D :D Funny, I've got the Orange tank plastics and was thinking I liked the Silver. I've seen a few pics where some have just removed them completely, leaving just the matte black tank. Look...

Re: Engine runs badly at 5000-5500 on 6th.

This is absolutely not how a 2011 SMT should behave. I believe you have the right motorcycle, but the wrong technician. Mine is happiest at 5,000rpm and above, that's where she wants to play. +1 I've had more bother with a smooth running '10my SMT than anyone else I know - BUT from 5k upwards the b...

Re: The Buffeting is getting on my nerves!!!

I just use the KTM touring screen (I actually like the way it looks) and don't have any buffeting problems. I'm 5' 11" 'ish too (and have Shoei, Arai and Schuberth lids - so agree it isn't a lid issue) and it's great up to three figures - when pressure on the shoulders increases somewhat. Another ge...

Re: SMT mirror vibration

Just a thought - have you tried adjusting the position of the mirrors and re-tightening?

I moved mine (to ease wind blast on my hands) with no issues whatsoever and I wonder if it's buffeting off the hand guards that's causing the problems? After all 5k revs in top is fairly shifting through the air.

Re: SMT mirror vibration

Must admit I've never even heard of anyone complaining about vibration of the mirrors - especially not at those revs. Are you sure there isn't something else up?? Bad vibes when the engine should be smooth doesn't sound right somehow?

Re: Advance the ignition timing on my SMR990

Mine's an 09 . A change to a '10 or '11 map might be quite radical. Not sure if '11 map is compatible with '09 bike. I know '10my is defo ok though. I'm off out to the garage again, I foolishly volunteered to put a clutch in my mates 1100RT, not a pretty sight when you get the bodywork off it! Let'...

I take it then that you don't keep your new bikes more than two years?

Remind me never to buy a second hand bike from you!!!!

Re: Is fuelling sorted on 2011 bikes??

Agreed. If you have a problem bike the rough / uneven running issues will manifest themselves at revs up to and including 5k. If it's only a bit lumpy below 3k I agree that's just a result of two big cylinders, disconnecting the sensors can't hurt unless you are running standard cans. KTM warn that ...

Re: Advance the ignition timing on my SMR990

There are differences with the 2011 map - I've had it installed and it helps with calming the throttle reaction, ie feels like a gentler throttle cam is fitted.
There are subtle differences with heads on '11my bikes, but this doesn't seem to matter as KTM approved the download in to my bike.

Re: Whining front brake

Mine started squeeking / creaking / whining - generally making a noise other than zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - and then started pulsing. I've had to have new rotors and pads fitted. Apparently it isn't as uncommon as you might think. I have friends with Brembo brakes and pads (on Ducati's and BMW's) and t...

Re: 1190 SMTR

It is definitively what i'm not waiting from KTM...i would prefer to keep the 990 engine which is quiet enough regarding power and torque, but earn 30 kg on the bike to have 130 horses for 160 or 150 kg....with the same architecture, what a dream I'd dread to think what kind of exotic materials you...

Re: Squeeky rear brake

P.S. Don't drop your forks thru that 10mm as suggested elsewhere on here unless want your SMT to be as twitchy as a sports bike. Sorry, gonna have to disagree with that last statement - I know this is a braking thread, but dropping the forks through the yokes just moves the weight a little bit more...

Re: Oil consumption?

Worked wonders with my oil consumption and made for a smoother more enjoyable ride. Not sure if this is all to do with large cylinders sucking oil back past the rings, or just urban myth, but it worked for me. Interesting observation - I wonder if it is a result of the oil bypassing rings or whatev...

Re: What did you do to your ktm today?

Fitted KTM anodised orange bar ends. Also, made up some custom s/s exhaust guards - I needed them to hide the joint between the Quill cans and standard exhaust 'y' piece. It'll never look as clean as the Akro set up - but then the cans were a fraction of the price and the guards cost bugger all (my ...

Re: Gel seat - any difference?

Exactly the same here - I thought the standard seat was rubbish, anything more than an hour on the bike was murder. The gel seat is a revelation, spent all day on the bike and not so much as a twinge. I think it depends on your weight and shape; seems the people that love the gel seat hate the std ...

the way petrol is going i aint gonna rule out a 800cc bmw just yet. :D You might get an extra 5mpg, even 10mpg, from the BMW twin - but I doubt you'd get anywhere near the amount of sheer enjoyment from riding one. You certainly won't get the same acceleration or handling. Guess it depends upon why...
